TRAUMA-RELATED STRESS · DISTRESSING MEMORIES · OLD REACTIONS

When the Event Is Over but Part of Your Nervous System Didn’t Get the Memo

People searching for trauma therapy, PTSD help, trauma treatment, or help with distressing memories in Albany, Oregon may be dealing with very different levels of need. Some require licensed trauma psychotherapy, psychiatric care, or coordinated medical treatment. Others are functioning well but still notice that certain memories, triggers, shame, fear, anger, or protective reactions keep intruding on present life.

A Past Experience Can Keep Showing Up in Present Tense

  • A memory still produces a strong physical or emotional reaction.
  • You avoid reminders, conversations, places, people, intimacy, conflict, or situations connected to what happened.
  • You become hyper-alert, shut down, angry, ashamed, numb, or disconnected in ways that feel automatic.
  • You understand that the present situation is different, but your body responds as though the old one is still happening.
  • Something happened years ago and still seems to get a vote in decisions today.

Protection Can Outlive the Danger

Many reactions that become a problem later began as an attempt to protect you. Avoidance, vigilance, emotional shutdown, control, anger, people-pleasing, or dissociation-like distancing may once have made sense.

The cost comes when an old protective strategy keeps limiting relationships, sleep, intimacy, confidence, travel, work, or the ability to feel safe when the actual circumstances have changed.

Scope and Safety Come Before Technique

I do not assume that every distressing memory belongs in my scope. We begin by understanding what is happening, what triggers it, how stable your current situation is, what support you already have, and what you want to change.

When appropriate, emotional-change work can use tapping, focused attention, imagery, breathing, language, memory work, and state shifts to reduce the charge around specific experiences without asking you to write graphic details into an online form.

If licensed trauma therapy is the appropriate level of care, I will say so.

Is This the Right Kind of Help?

Possible fit: you are stable, functioning, able to participate voluntarily, and want to work with specific triggers or memories that still carry emotional charge.

Not the right fit: active crisis, immediate danger, severe instability, psychosis, uncontrolled substance withdrawal, or situations requiring licensed trauma treatment or psychiatric management. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, call/text 988 in the U.S. or use emergency services.

If You’re Ready to Find Out What’s Actually Keeping the Pattern Going

The private inquiry is intentionally deeper than a contact form. It helps me understand what you want, how you know the problem is a problem, what triggers it, what you have tried, what it has cost, and whether my scope fits what you need.

You do not need to decide on a treatment plan. We begin by finding out whether working together makes sense.

Common Questions

Is this trauma therapy or PTSD treatment?

No. David does not diagnose PTSD or provide licensed trauma psychotherapy. He may work with specific emotional reactions and distressing memories when the situation is within his scope and the person is stable.

Will I have to describe everything that happened?

No. The intake specifically allows people to identify memories or experiences without writing graphic details. The amount of detail used in a session depends on what is useful and appropriate.

Can I do this while working with a trauma therapist?

Potentially, if your licensed clinician and the overall situation make complementary work appropriate. Your primary clinical treatment should not be discontinued or changed because of this service.

What if I am currently unsafe?

Use emergency, crisis, domestic-violence or other appropriate professional resources first. This is not an emergency or crisis service.
