When reaching, lifting, gripping or playing becomes the problem
Shoulder, Arm & Hand Pain Treatment in Albany, Oregon
For painful reaching, shoulder restriction, overuse, forearm tension, elbow pain, hand symptoms and the frustrating loss of things you used to do without thinking.
Does This Sound Familiar?
Shoulder and upper-extremity problems show up in surprisingly specific ways: reaching behind your back, putting on a jacket, pressing overhead, sleeping on one side, gripping a racquet, playing guitar, typing, lifting a child, or carrying a bag.
You may feel pain, weakness, stiffness, clicking, fatigue, numbness, tingling or a sense that the arm simply does not move the way it used to.
What May Be Causing Shoulder, Arm & Hand Pain?
Possible contributors include scar tissue adhesions, rotator cuff or tendon irritation, joint restriction, muscle overload, repetitive gripping, neck-related nerve irritation, shoulder blade mechanics, previous injury, and training or work demands.
A sore shoulder can be a shoulder problem. It can also be influenced by the neck, upper back, ribs and the way the arm is being asked to transfer force.
How Shoulder, Arm & Hand Pain Is Diagnosed—and What I Assess
Medical diagnosis may involve history, examination, strength and motion testing, and imaging or neurological testing when indicated. I do not diagnose tears, nerve entrapments or other medical conditions.
I assess how the shoulder, scapula, neck, elbow, forearm and hand move together; what positions reproduce symptoms; where tissue is restricted; and whether changing one part of the chain changes the complaint.
How David’s Approach May Help
Depending on the pattern, treatment may include targeted massage, orthopedic manual therapy, mobility work, forearm and hand work, nerve-friendly positioning and movement changes.
For musicians and performers, I also care about the thing generic rehab instructions often miss: you need enough function for the exact task, not merely enough range of motion to pass a clinic test.
Why It Matters to Address the Pattern
Upper-extremity problems have a talent for invading daily life because you use your hands for nearly everything. People stop sleeping on a side, change how they train, avoid instruments, reduce work capacity or subtly stop reaching.
The aim is to restore useful capacity before workaround becomes identity.
When to Get Medical Evaluation First
Prompt medical evaluation is appropriate after major trauma or dislocation, with sudden severe weakness, rapidly progressive numbness, loss of hand function, significant swelling or deformity, chest pain with arm symptoms, or other concerning neurological or systemic changes.
