When You Keep Having the Same Fight With Updated Vocabulary

If you are searching for marriage counseling, couples therapy, relationship counseling, or help with recurring relationship conflict in Albany, Oregon, what you may really want is not another explanation of communication. You want the reaction that hijacks the conversation to stop running the relationship.

Relationship Problems Often Have a Very Predictable Cast of Characters

  • The same trigger starts the same argument, even when you both promised to handle it differently.
  • One person pursues; the other shuts down.
  • Resentment, jealousy, people-pleasing, defensiveness, mistrust, criticism, or fear quietly does the talking.
  • You know what a healthy conversation should sound like—about fifteen minutes after the unhealthy one ends.
  • Old injuries from this relationship, or earlier ones, keep getting recruited into present-day disagreements.

The argument may be about dishes, money, sex, time, family, texting, or whose turn it was. The emotional pattern underneath is often older and far more consistent.

Avoiding the Pattern Does Not Make It Neutral

Unresolved relationship triggers tend to charge interest. A conversation you avoid becomes distance. Distance becomes assumption. Assumption becomes resentment. Resentment gets promoted to evidence.

The cost may be intimacy, trust, affection, teamwork, confidence, family stability, or simply the exhausting feeling that you have to manage the relationship instead of live inside it.

Where My Work Fits—and Where It Doesn’t

I work with the emotional reactions, beliefs, memories, fears, resentment, shame, jealousy, boundaries, and automatic protective responses that a person brings into relationship conflict.

If you need a licensed marriage and family therapist to jointly diagnose or treat the relationship as a couple, that is not what I provide. My work is especially useful when one person recognizes, “I keep having the same reaction, and I want to change my part of the pattern.”

When appropriate, the inquiry can help us determine whether a private emotional-change session makes sense or whether licensed couples therapy is the better route.

Is This the Right Kind of Help?

Good fit: you are willing to look at your own triggers and responses instead of using the session to build a legal brief about why the other person is the problem.

Not the right fit: you need domestic-violence intervention, crisis services, formal couples psychotherapy, custody evaluation, or a clinician to determine whether the relationship should continue.

If You’re Ready to Find Out What’s Actually Keeping the Pattern Going

The private inquiry is intentionally deeper than a contact form. It helps me understand what you want, how you know the problem is a problem, what triggers it, what you have tried, what it has cost, and whether my scope fits what you need.

You do not need to decide on a treatment plan. We begin by finding out whether working together makes sense.

Common Questions

Is this marriage counseling or couples therapy?

No. David does not provide licensed marriage and family therapy. He works with individual emotional patterns—triggers, resentment, fear, jealousy, shame, people-pleasing, boundaries and automatic reactions—that may be affecting a relationship.

Can my partner come with me?

Session format depends on the situation and scope. The private inquiry is the place to describe what you want and whether you are seeking individual or relationship-focused work.

What if my partner refuses counseling?

You can still work on your own reactions, boundaries and patterns. Changing your part does not guarantee another person will change, but it can give you clearer choices.

What if there is abuse or I do not feel safe?

Safety comes first. Emotional-change sessions are not a substitute for domestic-violence resources, emergency services or licensed care appropriate to unsafe relationships.
